The Leuven Cancer Institute (LKI) was established as part of KU Leuven and University Hospitals Leuven and is the largest comprehensive cancer center in Belgium. The LKI structure combines and integrates research, therapy and care to stimulate innovative interactions between these three domains. All LKI activities are centered at the Gasthuisberg Health Campus, a unique hub for multidisciplinary collaboration between clinicians and scientists. Collaborative efforts at the LKI are structured in “focus groups” which assemble key players (clinicians, basic scientists…) to focus on common interests (particular cancer types, therapeutic approaches, new technology development etc.). Main activities in life science/health:
- World class biomedical research into the fundamental mechanisms of cancer.
- Top quality medical care and pioneering clinical trials for novel therapeutics and biomarkers.
- Development of novel technologies for cancer diagnosis (imaging, multi-omics).
- Biobanking, bio(medical) informatics, Big Data (genomic, biomarker, clinical, imaging), precision medicine.
